On September 20, 2023 the NYS Department of Health (DOH) announced resident case mix information would be moving to the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) for Medicaid reimbursement.  PDPM for case mix will have its opportunities, as well as its challenges for SNF providers.  Successful implementation will rely on accurate coding of the MDS (i.e., ICD-10 diagnosis codes, functional assessment scores in section GG).

The industry is moving away from a reimbursement system that incentivizes the allocation of therapy minutes to a system that reimburses SNF’s based on patient characteristics and the care provided. This program will provide attendees with the knowledge and tools to prepare for successful transition to PDPM for CMI in your SNF.

Explain the basic components of the PDPM system and how they may be utilized by NYS as the ‘new’ Case Mix system

•        Understand how Section GG/Functional measures have replaced Section G/ADL’s and how they will impact the case mix – PDPM score

•        Understand the impact on the role of the MDS Coordinator as well as IDT

•        Develop an understanding of systems that play a key role in ensuring that the care and services are reflected accurately in Case Mix.

•        Assist the SNF in developing proactive processes to ensure continuously accurate reflection of the facilities case mix.

•        Develop an action plan to support a successful facility transition to PDPM for CMI

•        Describe strategies to evolve the MDS department into a Quality Management and Monitoring epicenter for the facility
