Description The session will review the key elements of the revised DOH MOLST released on June 1, 2025 and demonstrate the 8-Step MOLST Protocol affirmed by DOH as the correct process for completing the MOLST. The ethical framework and legal requirements for making end-of-life decisions under NYS Public Health Law (PHL) and scope of practice will be defined. The authority and accountability for practitioners (physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) for MOLST will be explained, along with the role of other health care professionals (nurses, social workers, clergy) within scope of practice. Challenges to MOLST implementation in long term care will be explored; adoption of a multidimensional approach to advance care planning will be proposed.
